Los Angeles Fire Department

The Los Angeles Fire Department’s Air Operations responds to over 1000 missions per year.  Our mission profile includes Firefighting, Swift Water Rescue, Air Ambulance Transports, Air Borne Task Force insertions, Hoist Rescues, Aerial Recognizance and Search & Rescue.  Our average lift off from time of alarm is 7 to10 minutes and we provide these services to the citizens of Los Angeles 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.

In the Los Angeles region there is a complex urban/ wild land interface that increases the risk of our diverse mission profile.  The night environment significantly magnifies our operational risk due to all of the unseen hazards that are beyond the illumination of the aircrafts search light and night sun.

Over 10 years ago we made a commitment to make the Night Vision Goggle conversion program our number one priority.  After years of struggling to identify funding sources and researching all of the possible options, we decided that Aero Dynamix was the best choice to partner with.  That partnership has led to us completing the STC approved NVG conversion of our glass cockpit Bell Jet Ranger and two of our Bell 412EP’s.

The fit and finish of all three aircraft is “as advertised”.  The nighttime readability of all three cockpits is exemplary which makes the transition from aided to un-aided effortless.  The largest challenge that we faced on the glass cockpit Bell Jet Ranger and the Bell 412EP’s was daylight readability.  Aero Dynamix has made every effort to meet our challenging demands of daylight readability and has provided us with a product that has exceeded our expectations.

The Night Vision Goggle aircraft conversion program has been one of the largest safety improvements that we have made at Air Operations in years.  Aero Dynamix has not only provided the LAFD with a quality product that allows us to fly safer, but more importantly, has continued to stand by their product in an effort to meet our needs.

In the Search and Rescue community we have recognized our responsibility to share all of the “lessons learned” whether good or bad.  I would be happy to share our experience with any operator, Civil or Government, which are looking for NVG solutions.
